How to Get Rid of House Gnats Naturally (and for good).

After we moved into our new house almost two years ago I went crazy buying new house plants to fill up the new large space. I was so excited and having a lot of fun buying plants, potting, and designing with them. At the time (and from inexperience) I didn't realize how important it the soil choice would be.

After a couple months of my new plants settling into their new home I started seeing these pesky little house gnats flying around - in my face, in my coffee in my windows and with a closer look, all over the soil in my plants! After doing a bit of research it turned out I used the wrong potting soil which was the culprit of my new enemy. Apparently, 'indoor/outdoor potting soil' isn't really good for indoor use.

So, off I set to destroy these little buggers. I wanted to try to get rid of the gnats naturally, without the use of chemicals. Really, we breathe in enough bad stuff already why add to it?
So the first thing I did, after Googling everything I could on how to get rid of house gnats was I tried setting a glass of red wine with a little dish soap added in here and there near the plants, it caught some but not enough - I also tried apple cidar vinegar with the same results.
Then I tried the sticky yellow fly tape which also caught a lot but the infestation was still pretty bad. Next, I went for Neem oil, still nothing. I even tried natural insecticidal soap, letting the plants dry out as much as I could without killing them, watering only at the base, watering with a pvc pipe stuck into the soil so that the water only goes down near the roots, I EVEN repotted some of them with clean soil.... NOTHING seemed to work.

As winter came I soon noticed the gnats were disappearing. I thought maybe they finally died off and I was rid of them. Ha! NOT. As spring approached this year they were back with a vengeance.

This time I was going after these little devils with full artillery, no messing around this time. So I got on my rubber gloves, put the cat outside and sprayed all the plants heavily with pyrethrin. Now I've used this poison before on other pests and it works pretty darn good. I figure by now I'm an expert on how not to kill house gnats, I was determined to beat these bad boys once and for all. After several treatments a couple days apart, guess what? Pyrethrin didn't kill them either.

Now I knew I was dealing with something that could potentially take over the world. This was bad, I was scared.

If you've read this far I'm sure you're wondering what the heck happened, did the gnats take over my house? The answer actually is NO. I did finally get rid of my house gnats for good with a little determination and a lot of vacuuming. Yes, getting rid of gnats naturally worked simply with the vacuum hose.

Most of the gnats congregated above the plants in my window seal in the early afternoon as soon as the sun hit the windows. As soon as they showed up I sucked them up with the vacuum hose.
It took some diligence because I swear they reappeared out of nowhere in the dozens as soon as I vacuumed them but I was determined. The first couple days I was vacuuming the window seals every 5 minutes or so for about a half hour. I just left the vacuum out, no sense in hauling the thing back and forth everyday. It took about a week to get rid of them but it's been about a month now and I'm happy to say they're still gone! So, my expert advice for the best way to get rid of house gnats naturally is to simply vacuum them up.

Houseplants are not only beautiful to have but they also provide your home with good quality air by naturally purifying the indoor air. So, they are actually very important for our overall health. Just take precautions before potting your plants and buy indoor potting soil. You can also take extra steps to sterilize your soil by microwaving it and cooling it before use.

These are all plants I have in my Northern California yard. The weather here is fairly mild with lows in the 30's in the winter with a few freezes throughout. Summers can get in the 100's. Check your zone before planting any of these in your area.
I love these flowering plants because they survive through the winter and most have a long blooming period.

1. Geranium - my neighbor gave me some clippings of this red Geranium, I stuck them in the ground and they grew! Doesn't get much easier than that.

2. English Lavender - I have a few of these in my yard and plan to get more. These beautiful bushes grow well and have a beautiful scent and are extremely hardy!

3. Rosemary - Our house had Rosemary in the front when we moved here 2 years ago. These plants grow pretty little periwinkle flowers, are evergreen and smell delicious. Another bonus is you can use the leaves for cooking.

4. Alyssum - I just love Alyssum. These low growing plants are annuals but they reseed themselves easily so they come back year after year. There are many colors to choose from, yellow, pink, purple, white... and they're very showy. I just bought some seeds on eBay and am getting ready to plant them.

5. Santa Barbara Daisy - Also known as Mexican Daisies, these low growing micro daisies make a great ground cover that stays green year round. Their pretty little flowers have an array of white petals mixed in with light pinks too that show off brightly next to their dark green leaves.

6. Aster - This flower surprised me this year because not only did it sail through winter but it's one of the first to bloom and it's only February. This plant grows really well and can cover a lot of ground easily. It has beautiful, showy flowers and is super easy to grow.
7. Passion Flower - I had never seen such an unusual flower before until we moved to our new house. The previous owner must've planted it and I'm so glad she did! This hearty vine needs something to climb on and is a fast grower, growing up to 30 feet in a season. The flower is spectacular!

8. Dianthus - Another easy grower and blooms all spring and summer. Comes in reds, pinks and white.

9. Blue daisy (Felicia amelloides) - I transplanted this one in my new garden 2 years ago and it has gone wild in my yard! Well, not really but it's gotten big and it has pretty little purplish blue daisies with a yellow center. Another plant that blooms pretty much throughout the year.

10. Maderia Daisy - I bought one of these last year and I'm getting more this year. These hot pink daisies are quite showy and are in full bloom - it's only February! They will stay in bloom throughout the spring and summer all the way into fall here.

11. Canna Lily - We inherited the orange Canna lillies with our house, these plants propagate themselves, grow about 4-9 feet tall and have beautiful, big bright orange flowers. A must for any garden.

I'm all about easy, low maintanence and these flowers are perfect for that. What easy plants do you grow in your garden?

Recently I've been on a quest to start my own plants either from cuttings or seed mostly because it's cheaper to start my own rather than buy and it's fun! As every gardener knows growing your own plants from babies to adults is a rewarding experience that can't be replaced from buying an already grown plant at the local home store.

So, where do you go to get plant cuttings to start on your own?

1. Join your local Freecycle group - this is an excellent place to ask for plant cuttings in your own city. I just recently received for free Jade tree cuttings (so easy to start) and rose clippings to start my own rose bushes. I've also given away numerous iceplants from my own yard for others to start as well. All you have to do is ask!

2. Post an ad on Craigslist.org in your city. Often you will find others selling plants cheaply or you can ask for clippings in the wanted or farm section.

3. Friends and family are a good source for new plants. Every time I visit my sister I take some cuttings from her succulents and she does the same when she comes to see me!

Here are a few plants I've recently started:

4. Your neighbors are another good source for plant clippings. My next door neighbor has some really unusual plants in her garden, we've traded clippings many times.

5. Take trimmings from your plants and start them in a new pot. I just recently repotted my Philodendron plant and was able to divide the plant into two pots. I've also clipped some longer vines and started them in water. These plants are easy to start and grow fast.

6. There are several places you can swap plants online, www.plantswap.net is one that seems very active. There's also forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/explant but this one seems a little less organized than the first one.

There are lots of ways to get free plants from cuttings. Do you have a source for free plants?

Have you ever dreamed of having your own home garden greenhouse? Most of you have seen the huge and expensive greenhouses and probably figured it's just not doable, either because you don't have enough room in your backyard garden or they're just too expensive.
But whether you're a beginning gardener or you've been digging dirt since you were practically in diapers you know that most plants can't grow and thrive all year long without leaving them in a sorry disposition.

Perhaps you're like me and would like to start seeds or get an early start on those tomatoes well now you can with an affordable mini greenhouse. These small size greenhouses are perfectly suitable for small backyards, patios or even inside the home. You can grow plants all year long and not have to worry about the harsh elements of the wind, snow or cold getting to your plants.

There are several styles of mini greenhouses to choose from. You can build your own from scrap windows, plastic and pvc for example or you can buy one ready made. Any of these are great for growing greenhouse plants.

Some great vegetable plants to start or grow in a mini greenhouse are:
1. heirloom tomatoes
2. peppers
3. lavender
4. eggplants
5. strawberries
6. cucumbers
7. herbs (basil, thyme, rosemary)

Grow these small flowering plants from seed, they're easy to start and grow:
1. Alyssum
2. Dianthus
3. Marigolds
4. Pansies
5. Salvia
